I can't speak to that, as I've never used VDJ. What i can say is: Serato has been much less complex, with much less creative features, compared to traktor. It's also been quite stable and reliable.

Now, I based that opinion on my previous encounters with Serato. I downloaded their new version last night for free, just to check it out. The interface is still pretty boring, but it's really proving stable as it stripes 85,000 files, and their implementation of Sampler and "flips" is interesting.

I ordered the DJ-808 last night after loads of videos, forums, etc. I am really, really into NI, but I'm willing to try another setup and see how it goes. If NI releases more inter-connectivity with Traktor and Maschine in the 30 days I'm trialing my new device, great. If not, perhaps it's time for a change.

Read a little of this thread and something popped up that surprised me was somebody saying traktor is deep and complex.

Traktor is pretty simple. It offers reasonable amounts of creativity, but certainly not anything warranting complexity. I bought into traktor 2 months ago (with a X1mk2 and Z1) I have reached their limits and they feel quite restrictive. I deejayed on 1210s since 1989 until 2009 and often with Korg kaoss pad, and then stopped playing live. Last Dec 2016 I dropped my decks and vinyl and bought an x1 and z1. Traktor is not complex. But it's fantastic software and I really enjoy using this and the hardware. Any less complex and any less tight integration and flexibly with mappings would have dissuaded me. I don't consider myself a fangirl, but I really love what they made.

I hope to see some small portable 4 deck mixer ( Z1-ish sized) so I can run either 2 * X1s and some F1s), ability to import effects because Traktor effects are mostly naff; Ability to sample from deckA with it's effects applied: Currently I have to use the LoopRecorer on the main to achieve this [Cue won't record the FX/EQ change]. Except I want to sample from the cued deckA with effects/EQ and then drag into F1, then play deck A without the FX/EQs and use my altered sample at another time. Z1 with dropin replacement faders.

Deejays are like everybody else: some are lazy and some are not and some are inbetween.

I would argue that it's not complex in terms of "difficult to understand how to use it", but if you're running all 4 decks on the S8 (mixed with remix decks and stems), using the loop and fx modes all in flux, really pushing the system - it does a LOT for creativity. It's hard to say it's not complex when you're using two of their smaller, very simple controllers. No offense, I own those as well. They're great. They just don't unlock the entirety of it's capabilities. Still, I have issue with my S8 and traktor, hence the something else!

    Absolutely agreed.

Likely why I feel constrained by an x1 z1 setup. The D2 is great except I need two to replace an X1. Price portability and space ruled this out.

However the complexity is beijg able to keep track of where you are in all of the tracks playing whilst using flux/cue points, loops and many decks playing.
The software enables this level of complexity. The software itself is not complex to use.

I have read this on multiple occasions, but is that so? I am a hip hop DJ myself and I deliberately chose for Traktor. I figured if it's good enough for guys like Craze, Qbert, Shiftee then it sure is good enough for me.

Controllers released with serato bundled must out number traktor 100 to 1 if not more, it's that simple. New DJs ain't gonna pick an s8 over an sx2 in my opinion.

I didn't say "all", but the majority do for sure.

I can see why, in a way. Serato is really dead stable & the platters/Xfader on the dj808 are way more snappy with way less latency than the S8.

Now the Z2, that's another story. Still, Traktor - while I LOVE it (and have been on it since V1 of Final Scratch) can get buggy at times.
