    ipad |= powerful touch computer

i definitely think that touch devices will be used more and more - but ipads will not be among these, not powerful enough, not versatile enough, IMHO.

I think in a few years the iPad and its competition will easily be powerful enough to hook an s2 or s4 into and run traktor, Id much rather lug an ipad and mixer around than my costly laptop. If ni used core midi you could use do it already. Theres definately something nicer about a the feel of a mixer over a touch screen, but that might just be because Ive always had a mixer.

One advantage of the touch screen is the crossfader can be however you like, big or small, and it will never need replacing :)

Actually, I have replaced all my controllers with touch devices already. As many of you should expect, it was not the best experience at first, but I soon realized it was just another way of interacting with software. Now, it's the best controller out there for me.

So, as soon as the core elements can run on the same iPad (background) and I can select parts of that app to be shown on the controller's interface, I say yes, there is a good chance I will only carry iPads and sound cards to clubs.

*This is actually already done with a Windows 7 touch device - the emulator.

No one could imagine in 1850 that a horse will replaced - ever ... ;-)

I think that personal computers will be replaced by cloud computers in near future. mobile internet access and a huge bandwith will make this possible.
so you don't need to upgrade your hardware in short seqs like today.

    zero interest no matter what...

    1. a 15" screen is 'acceptable", a 13" "bearable" but a 9"? forget it.
    2. touchscreen just doesnt cut it for tactile and speed response
    3. using core-midi has significant latencies, adding to the lack of response mentioned in 2 above
    4. lack of connectivity and drivers limits you to crummy onboard audio
    5. not cheaper than a laptop

So its smaller screen, less responsive, poorer audio, harder to use and at least as expensive...

    ...

just cause its not happening today doesnt mean it wont, companies have to make money on the technology that is available to date. garunteed in a few years the technology will be there, but by then there will be bigger and better controllers. its a viscous circle, but you cant say it wont happen.

sorry, but powerful solutions are already out there.

the ipad is just an overrated, fancy toy. touch devices in general not.

So other than your dislike of the iPad, you agree?

    yup.

we're just scratching the surface here. if you see the asus that i linked - it's already a laptop replacement.
so, when it comes to laptop replacements: definitely a yes.
controller replacement: not for everybody i think. "real" knobs and faders provide a haptic that you cannot replace completely, i guess... :)

so, IMHO, tablets / convertibles will replace traditional laptops and the softwares will get more and more "touchable" - it's gonna be a great addition to the setups as we have them now.
but not a complete hardware replacement when we talk about controllers, at least not within a short timeframe.

    but... that's just my 2ct ;)

Much as I like the multitouch tablet format and all the great apps being written, I still like like faders and dials I can tweak without having my eyes locked to a computer screen.

At the moment I use the iPad Lemur App to recall effect-presets, view the level of the mix recorder and to controll the masterclock panel. Its also quite nice for beatgridding.
So, my opinion is that an iPad is a nice addition to regular controllers because with DIY Controller Apps like Lemur or TouchOSC one is able to create controlsurfaces that fits the personal needs. In some circumstances, spontanious housepartys with no DJ equip available e.g., it can also be used as a replacement for regular DJ stuff.

If you'd asked 5 years ago if laptops would replace CDJ's, or 10 years ago if CDJ's would replace turntables, what would the reaction be?

Even now there are some pretty competent apps out there for iPad, be it DJ software, MIDI controller apps like Griid, Touch OSC or TouchAble, or "instrument" apps like Tenori-On and the hardware supported Akai MPC Fly

They may have shortcomings right now but 'm certainly excited by the potential.

I think neither the turntables nor the cdjs or anything will be replaced, it´s just the diversity that´s growing and imo that´s a good thing! :)

    i agree.

in my genre you wont find any CDJs in the club (at least not in germany, i was told in the US it looks much different).
