Now, I know these are two different products but one must admit there is quite a bit of functional overlap. Of course, Maschine can do things Battery can't and vice-versa. But these are both drum oriented products.

Reason I ask about a crossgrade is that two of the more requested features for Battery - sample-slicing and dedicated sequencer - just happened to show up in Maschine (instead of say, an update to Battery).

Now, if NI add those features to the next Battery update then all is well and good but if they don't make it in I've got to say this rubs me a bit the wrong way.

That being said, Maschine looks like a lot of fun.

IMHO, Maschine is much closer to Reaktor (with a hint of Kore2) than it is to Battery.

    well that piques my interest....

    in what ways?

from watching the videos (and from owning Kore2) I can see the hint of Kore2 but didn't see much that made me think Reaktor (then again I'm mostly a "user" and not a "builder")

after watching the videos again it makes me think that Kore should have a step-sequencer that refers to (and auto-update) cell names within Battery (Like Live's MIDI editor does with Drum Racks). Or maybe it would be best to just include such a step sequencer within Battery (as per many feature requests)...

Yup... I'd like to know as well! I can see the differences with Battery. But I find it difficult to see the relation with Reaktor.

This thing looks definitely very nice. Can't wait.

I can see the origins of Maschine in such ensembles as Limelite, SineBeats and Krypt. The two Massive grooveboxes could be considered signposts in the development as well.

I suppose you're right but that's really only saying that Maschine is similar to other grooveboxes that happen to be made with Reaktor. I still don't see the similarity between Machine and the overall concept of Reaktor.

But that's really beside the point for me which is this: people have been requesting sample slicing and a dedicated step sequencer for Battery for a while now and it kinda stinks that those features turn up in a different instrument that is also focused on drums.

For my purposes, Maschine's more limited function as a drum sampler is actually preferable to Battery's numerous options that I rarely use. With sample slicing and a dedicated step sequencer it is perfect. The problem is, I have Komplete 5 and Kore 2 and will have a hard time justifying spending $600 on features that arguably should have been included in a product I already own. I do realize that a lot of that $600 is due to the hardware aspect and that the selling point of Maschine is the (impressive looking) level of integration between hard and software.

In the end I just wish NI would listen to those numerous requests for sample slicing and step sequencing in Battery and include them in the next version. But that seems unlikely because then there would be even more overlap of features with Maschine.

also think of L3, all the SQ Sequencers even Blue Matrix. also the layout of the Maschine Samplers are much closer to Reaktor ones.

for me, Maschine and Battery are quite different in concept.

there is a problem in that a number of NI products use sampling. and that means there will be similarities and differences.

it you are a Komplete owner, then you have Reaktor. Reaktor does Sample Slicing and Step Sequencing.

my big wish is that Kore 3 will have a dedicated Drum Sequencer, something like a souped up Drum 16 and also a Polyphonic Keyboard Sequencer

fyi, if you have Kore, you can use Reaktor's Drum 16 Sequencer to trigger Battery inside Kore

but - many of the feature requests for Battery are for things that would have made it much more like Maschine. Instead of implementing those requests into Battery, NI made a whole new product with them.

sure you can do slicing and sequencing in Reaktor, and I have used Drum 16 inside Kore with Battery but Drum 16 doesn't display cell names that refer to Battery.

Maybe not a huge deal but that's the kind of functionality that would be great in a dedicated step sequencer in Battery

I'd still like to know if there will be a crossgrade price. I no longer use Battery 3, it would be nice to get some "value" out of it through a discount for Maschine...
