    Hello,

My computer just downloaded a new update (service pack 2) for Windows Vista.

And traktor went from smooth to bumpy (not in a good way clicks pops ect.)

I used DPC Latency Checker and sure enough I went from the odd yellow bar to almost all yellow bars.

The CPU indicator bar in traktor went from nearly all they way left to about 1/3 to the right.

I'm guessing that the new update installed a new service or something that I just need to disable.

    anyone else have this problem?

will the effects of service pack 2 be dealt with in the next tractor pro update.

    a little frustrated

Vista is pretty poor in general, but still, it is odd that service pack 2 would have this effect. Did you optimize Vista for audio before the service pack was installed? I'm guessing the update re-enabled something which was previously disabled.

However, if you can switch to XP, you will probably find it much better for running Traktor!

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, vista is a poor choice but it came with the lap top and I don't have copy of xp to install.

but that said I had my laptop working great - I shut off every service I didn't need and it was fully optimized for audio.

I agree the update likely "re-enabled something which was previously disabled." but I'm old, tired and not as bright as I used to be.

Can you still buy a copy of xp I was under the impression it was unavailable ,

    best

thank you for the link, I will attempt to fix things with Vista but it's nice to hear that the xp option is still available.

I will hunker down tomorrow night with my laptop and an espresso and see what happens. I will post my results this week.

In the mean time any suggestions would be really appreciated.

    best,

You could start with uninstalling the update under control panel => programs and restore your system to an earlier state before the update.

Worked late last night (defending truth and democracy) but I narrowed this problem down a bit.

    1) I turned on the laptop and ran DPC latency checker. I see all my green bars hugging the floor. With the odd short yellow bar.

    2) I turned on my korg zero 4 and run DPC again. (note - I have not started traktor yet) This is where my problem is beginning now I'm getting 4 or five yellow bars in a row and then a green bar or two followed by more yellow. This was not the case pre vista service pack 2 I was seeing mostly all green.

    3) I start traktor and run DPC again and get the same result 4 or 5 yellow bars in a row and then a green bar.

I will dig a little deeper into the windows services with my zero 4 on and see what I can find.

If I don't have nay luck I will try uninstalling service pack 2 (I'm not hopefull about this as windows never really uninstalls anything that well.

If anyone has other suggestions let me know.

    best

Maybe you should try looking at device manager too. I haven't used Vista + Traktor for some time but I do remember Windows update would turn on all those drivers (such as wireless and DVD drives) if they had been disabled.

    Macaque909,

I should have mentioned in my initial post, I have gone through the device manager and disabled all unnecessary devices, wireless, dvd drive, webcam and so on.

So I tried to uninstall the vista sp2 update no luck. I turned off a bunch of services and managed to stabilize things a bit but I still see only yellow bars when I do a latency check. and when I start pushing traktor I get the pops and clicks.

So me and Vista will be parting ways.

and now I'm looking for a copy of windows xp.

anyone have any idea what edition I need? home, professional

God this is going to be horrible.

wondering when the clumps of hair will grow back

Either will work but professional is a little more stable. Just make sure you can get the drivers you need for XP.

You might also want to consider doing a dual boot with Windows XP + Vista. Like this you could use XP just for Traktor and Vista for everything else.

If you're going to install XP on a laptop you bought with Vista already installed there's something you need to know about before hand. Most current laptops come with SATA hard drives which isn't supported when installing XP. You'll need to download SATA drives to a floppy disc to use when doing your install. Do a google search to find the correct drivers and information on how to do this properly.

If you haven't done this before it might be worth it to have it done quickly and properly by a third party.

Thank you both for your suggestions
I have no floppy disk drive so it looks like xp is out. I might try and get it professionally installed.
Or just reinstall vista and avoid service pack two
    or wait for windows 7.

now knee deep in my tears,

    This would be my suggestion:

Have a PC/Mac dedicated to Traktor only. Get whatever OS you feel most comfortable with and start with a clean installation. If you need to transfer music/updates/etc, use an external hard drive or thumb drive. Keep it off the internet! If you have to connect to the internet for whatever reason, make sure you're behind a firewall and do what you have to do quickly and don't flounder about checking email, surfing, etc. This way you can feel comfortable knowing there's no viruses, spyware, malware, etc on your computer messing things up.

    nightshadz,

thanks again, the lap top I have is a dedicated traktor computer I only go onto the internet to use beatport mixed in key or get a NI update I have norton antivirus for these tasks and can disable it the rest of the time DJ.

I'm leaning toward a clean install of vista -

    goodbye weekend,

Yeap... IMHO the best way to go is to do a clean install of Windows Vista and only install SP1 plus any fixes thru Windows Update. Download the network install of SP1 from Microsoft before you format your machine, that way you can re-install SP1 without having the computer connected to the Internet.

I've gotta tell ya that I'm leaning to doing something similar myself. I'm running Traktor 3.4 on Windows Vista 64-bit (Home Premium). My system has been very stable so far, but after I installed SP2 the idle CPU usage percentage climbed a bit, and with that the overall CPU temperature of my computer.

So far Traktor, my Maya 44 and my X-Session Pro are working fine... but I might decide soon to re-install Vista and get rid of SP2 and just stick with SP1 and everything that comes from Windows Update (Except SP2). :p

All done, 2 days later I'm rolling with with vista service pack 1again and life is back to normal.
I guess I will live with vista for a little while longer and when windows 7 comes out everything will be smooth, no bugs, no glitches, perfect. When has Microsoft ever let us down?...

Ah- not true with most of the latest chipsets and XP SP2 and above. On my machines, I didn't need to use the install third party RAID drivers prompt at the beginning of the XP install.

Any XP installer you buy from a shop now will be SP3; it's a non-issue.

It's been only about a week but so far everything seems to be working well with traktor. Unfortunately, windows vista is giving me a little trouble again. I can't update windows not a huge deal at the moment I think I will just stick with what I have for now. hopefully windows 7 will run lighter and smoother as the early reports are suggesting.

    thinking wishfully,
