Hi. I have just upgraded my soft to Komplete 12 Collectors Edition and i need to expand my hard disk. I use I7 driven desktop PC + Komplete Audio 6 MKII

Can you guys suggest me, do i need to invest SSD 2TB or can I use my 3TB IronWolf HDD?
In one hand i dont need to unnecessarily invest or overpower hardware, in the other i need low latency workflow.

I would go with a 1TB ssd, ultimate ue is 670 GB big with full install. Or is there any other reason for 2TB?
I can recommend the samsung 860 evo 1TB.

Full K12 with system install and some other NI products + all maschine expansions etc i can go to near 1 TB.
I always feel bad when the disk is almost full. But maybe I'm a little overreacted. But thanks for the idea with savings

Then maybe a samsung 860 qvo is something for you.

Go with the 2tb. Especially with the new QVO disks there is a huge performance drop when the disk is getting full.

Does your desktop PC mainboard offer a fast M.2 slot (supported by 4 PCIe lanes) ?
If yes,- I´m very satisfied with:

    1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 1.3 3D-NAND TLC (MZ-V7S1T0BW)

I don´t own Komplete 12 Ultimate,- just only Komplete 12.
I´ve put all the libraries on the M.2 and it´s lightning fast.

    Intel i7 4790k, AsRock Z97Extreme6, Samsung 860 Pro, Samsung 850 Evo, WD VelocyRaptor 300GB SATA600.

    :)

IO speed is all about disk rpm and the bus. The M2 interface is the way ahead for rapid access, SSD for super fast access and HDD for libraries and storage. I recently upgrades my old AMD 8350 system (32Gb Ram) with a Gigabyte AMD3+ 990x motherboard (£70) with M2 and WOW, bought 1Tb (£100) for all the OS apps (400Gb) vst plug in folders (40Gb) moved the main libraries and storage to 5Tb Tosh x300 drives (7500 rpm £110 each). DO you need your sound banks and main preset libraries on M2/SSD over 7500rpm HDD? I guess if you can justify/afford it why not, do you really need to, absolutely not.

I now use my old 500Gb Samsung SSD for all production and saved project work in progress and its like a new computer. I was going to invest in a Ryzen 3600 but to be honest I didn't need to my 8 yr old system is just fine as it is with albeit substantial upgrades.

Best upgrade I made was buying a 58" 4k TV (£600)and RX 580 8Gb £140) GPU compared to working on a smaller screens this is mind blowing specially as I am getting older and my eye sight is not what it was. 1080 is just too low a resolution and 4k is much better since you can increase the workspace you have and that matters more than anything else in my own eyes. Yes it was expensive coming in close to a grand (£1000) but it has made my life and music workflow so much more comfortable.

Personally I heavily prefer and rely on the setup where you put your OS onto an SSD and your (more dynamic?) data onto an HDD. I'm using a 512Gb HD for my OS and my software, together with a 4Tb HDD on which I store all my audio material. Honestly? I sincerely doubt that you're going to gain much advantages by using SSD's everywhere, because although they're quick with loading data they do suffer a bit when writing. Cache usually helps to overcome that, but it's still a thing, yet much less so on a HDD.

Another advantage, but this is limited to Windows only, are permissions. By default your useraccount has limited or no access to system folders such as 'program files' and such. However, that restriction only applies to the system drive (= drive on which the OS itself is installed) and doesn't necessarily apply to others, which also makes the usage of an extra drive more appealing.
