I've just noticed how loose my encoders are. In fact they just lift straight off, all 3 of them. It doesn't matter how hard I push, they won't click back into place. I'm not even sure they were in place to start with but they do look kind of high up.

Pissed off doesn't even start to describe it, I've only had this thing a couple of months.

    had the same thing.
At the first time I contacted NI support, returned my device and got a new one. Now, after about half a year, the encoders are loose again. I've accepted it, as I really like the X1. But of course this definitely shouldn't happen.

Same here, i contacted NI support, they gave me a generic excuse about X1 touch sensitive knobs and it's normal for them to be loose. But when i first purchased it they were all tight on the stems. Anyone know if I can purchase just the knobs?

Got mine like a week ago, from the first time i got it out of the box they were loose...should i contact NI? would it be worth it?
    (sorry, i'm new here)
And as for the chroma caps, do they stick [to the metal bits, dont know how to call them], or would they also be loose?

here is my story - right know im waiting for NI to answer me
i was very happy with my ximk2... but.. after 4-5 month my x1mk2 lost his brows and loop encoders... just over night! within the last month i received FOUR !!! YES - 4 !!! new controllers - and all of them have had the same problem - loosing the encoders! right now i´m contacting ni (before i bought it at Tohmann music store)...
UPDATE: yesterday i dropt in a music-store in berlin and asked the guys for a x1mk2 with tight knobs - if they find me one i would buy it immediately ... they did not understand at all... and said "no problem" ... until they opend a brand new x1 box. ... and a second one... they all lose the encoders - right out of the box!!! right know i had 6 (!SIX!) brand new controllers in my hands... all the same. this makes me very said. it seems like there is no fully working controller out there at this time.
i could replace the knops... but i then loose the touch-brows-function.
i have an s4 - those knobs are tight... and if i put them on my x1 they fit and they stay put as they should...
So NI - it is just that poor quality on those encoders - costing 1,-€ in the making - making the whole 189,- controller worthless!
Just send me a pack of knobs and i´m fine... BUT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT!

I contacted N.I. Support about this and they immediately offered to switch my unit for a brand new one.

There's a trick with crossfaders that comes to mind too. Fold a small piece of tissue over the stem then push the knob back on and it should stay in place unless it is forced off again. Not sure if that would affect the touch sensitivity though...

@ djenzyme and Adrian Gutierrez - NI probably change the unit... but i had FOUR new ones here and they all lost the encoders. in a musicstore i testet even two more (brand new) - they even lost the encoders. this make six units... all with the same problem. it simply looks that there is a problem in the production... hope you are lucky and get a working one.
for me... i life with that - peace of paper / tissue over the stem works to fix them! even the touch sensitivity works! i have done that to the brows-encoder! and i replace the loop encoders with croma caps. works for me... i still wait for NI to answer... but i keep this unit now before i lost another month sending it around.

Got mine yesterday, the encoders are loose as well.
Have to say that this doesn't bother me so much, I can use every function so I'm fine with that. When I'm sitting right in front of it, I can't even see that that there is a little gap between the x1's chassis and the knob

I think there must be something going wrong in production, too.

Since it does work without the encoder cap as well, I don't think those croma caps would influence touch sensitivity. Has somebody tried that so far?

TOTALY AGREE! - i still dont have any answer from NI - imagine you are in a club and you lose your encoder right before you dj set starts and wont find them due to low light...

Just got my BRAND NEW replacement and... 2 of the encoders are loose, they just lift straight off, no tension or resistance whatsoever.

I have a Maschine stand that got replaced 3 times because the Maschine didn't sit on it centrally, and still doesn't. Because of this, I don't even think its worth contacting N.I. again. They will just keep replacing rather than admit there is a manufacturing problem.

I would go for the Chroma caps but because I live in England, the cost of getting them imported just isn't worthwhile.

I guess I'll just have to make do. N.I. manufacturing sucks!

The track select knobs on my X1mk2 pulled straight off too, but I've also changed to chroma caps. Not fussed about the touch, I've turned that off anyhow because I'm used to pushing it in to browse and I like to keep it on browse sometimes.

Ive just tried to register my newly replaced hardware and the site keeps telling me the provided serial is invalid. Further inspection of the hardware shows the same invalid serial and nothing else! the provided serial isn't in the same format as all my other N.I. serials.

I hope this won't cause issues if my newly replaced hardware develops a fault in the future...

This must be a design fault with the X1. The bottom 3 knobs for loops and browse all slide straight off with no resistance on mine. I sent it back a few days later and I'm currently waiting for a new one after telling them to find me one with properly stuck on knobs.

I really like the unit so if the new one is like it then I might just glue them on. Got touch sensitivity turned off anyway.

But yeah, this is not good at all.

Yup - my knobs simply lift straight off, too, and I'm always afraid I'm going to lose them. Particularly since N+I isn't offering replacements. The Chroma Caps site says explicitly you lose the touch sensitivity, so though I don't think I'm overly using that, I don't want to lose it.

Thanks for the tissue suggestion; I'm going to try that. But - as appears to be typical - N+I appears to ignore issues in public until they have a solution - if ever. Sigh....

For those following this thread, I found an easy fix: Scotch (magic) tape.
    • Take off a knob
    • Cut a VERY small piece of scotch tape (e.g. 3/16" wide by 1/2" tall). Roughly approximate the size of the flattened portion of the shaft of the underlying potentiometer
    • Affix tape to shaft
    • Replace knob; test how hard it is to remove. Add more tape layers if needed. (It took 4 layers for me, but the knobs are very secure now.)
Note: This does retain touch sensitivity.
