Does you're CPU gets sucked by KORE? (you can check by unplugging KORE from the USB)

  1. No, KORE does not suck my CPU

Yes, plugging KORE into my USB sucks CPU power... very visible on the CPU usage graph (Task Manager).

    Windows XP.

    Why?
    What's the explaination?

    Hi there,

NI say this occurs on some machines.

For me it occurs on my centrino, pentium 4 and dual XEON, so all machines I have!

    Pentium 4 2.8 at default latency = 22-27% cpu.
Xeon 2.8 at default latency = 34-40% cpu.

I have been in touch with NI who say it is not a bad unit and they are looking into the driver problems.

    Cheers

    Andy

    "on some machines"...

The question really is how many machines... ?

I also have the feeling that this problem is much more widespread..

Well it is 100% of the 3 machines I have tried!

My nF4 board was giving close to those figures before it died, Andy- it was between 2-5%. The board I have in now isn't quite as forgiving- it's reading between 5-10% at idle, so figure the KORE controller's probably adding 3-8% in my case.

One of the product reps was wondering if it weren't a PCI latency issue. This article is mostly about UA gear, but the same thing may apply...

    Hi Ew,

For me it is not a pci latency issue.

I have my system set up with latency for the video card down to 64, firewire for mlan 128 and scsi at 72.

I use a pci latency tool that sets the latency of the various pci cards, I have tried it with 248 for the usb that kore is attached to, it makes absolutely no difference.

    Cheers

The Kore program itself uses very little cpu (1-2%) on my 2.8 G P4 in idle with no plugins loaded, but turning the controller knobs causes cpu spikes and uses an additional 8-20% cpu (sometimes even higher cpu usage occurs when turning 2 knobs at once). Note that this is on a completely fresh install of Windows XP Sp2, using an Emu 1820m soundcard for audio. The Kore software is nice, but the communication between controller and computer is seriously flawed. Using different USB and audio settings in the driver setup does not seem to make a difference for me. I can't effectively use Kore at all.

I may not know what I am talking about....but I read the article on PCI card latency, and I noticed this:

"If your audio device does not use bus-mastered DMA (e.g. M-Audio's Delta series, and any USB audio IO), you should either reduce the maximum PCI latency timer values of your devices (i.e. set your DSP cards to 32 or 64, and everything else lower than that), or increase the PCI latency timer value in the system BIOS to give the USB driver software higher priority."

So maybe reducing the timer values of USB devices (KORE),will help it not demand so much.

I decided to check out the cpu usage readings for Kore in Activity Monitor last night. After opening Kore in standalone mode and letting the cpu settle down i was getting a reading of approx 30% with no Performances loaded. As a comparison, an empty Logic Pro 7.2 project runs at about 5%, as does Kontakt 2 in standalone mode (perhaps slightly less).

I'm running a G5 1.8GHz iMac with 1Gb RAM, OSX 10.4.6 using Built in audio. The Kore hardware is being used as a midi interface only.

I personally get the feeling that there might be a fundamental problem with USB...

I don't know why, but I have a waldorf AGB16 which is a analog filterbank that get in and output from USB and the filters have a remote control... The device never sold much, because Waldorf went bankrupt. I had a lot of problems with USB drivers to get it working, and when it worked, the resolution of turning a filter up and down was very bad... so I became very suspicious about USB and Audio control...

Have you guys ever used a Moog filter (moogerfooger)?
Turning it is really smooth, smooth as mother nature ;->

    On 2.4Ghz P4 with 1 gig ram:
When I plug core in usage as shown in task manager goes up to aroun 20%.

When I open the Kore application, usage goes up to 35-45%

In Kore itself, usage reads 2%.
