DESCRIPTION

Auralis makes richly textured sounds that will be haunting you forever... [Umm, OK, lets try something else] Auralis is an experimental synth that makes all manner of strange sounds and sound effects... [Ah, too boring] Auralis could change up to 50 percent of your life into an anti-ageing dream, without limitation, for only £9.99! [Wow! That sounds great!]

The heart of the synth is basically an osc (or two) going into two delay units (one for each channel) that are modulated at an unusually high frequency rate (most of the time). The heart of the heart of the synth would then be the Micro delay mod, so have a peek in there if you\'re interested.

You can use the Randomize button in the Snapshots window to create snaps, but it\'s not really suited to the Morph function in that window. Nearly all of the snaps have either been made with the Randomize button, and then tweaked, or are based on a previously made snap.

- Fully polyphonic (excluding the effects), so it may be a bit heavy on the CPU. However, I only have a PIII 1GHz.
- Random note player. All the presets have been saved with this player on, so you can just sit back and listen.
- 27 presets
- Reaktor 4.0.2 on PC

Notes to version 1.1 (should be 1.0a) 22/08/2003:
THIS IS ONLY A SMALL FIX for Reaktor Session users. I got an email from someone saying there was no panel in the ensemble when they opened it. I had forgotten to make the instrument visible on the top (ensemble) level in Reaktor. Grrrr... I don't know whether Reaktor Session users can make it visible themselves, so I just thought I'd upload this little fix.
Note that this version has been saved in Reaktor 4.0.3.005 on PC.
-------------------------------------------
Note 22/09/2004: Eeek! Seems my so called fix (above) didn't fix anything. Nothing new here. Just the same fix I thought I had uploaded "only" a YEAR ago!!
Did I really forget to double-check the last time?? I don't get it...

This is still my favorite ensemble. I would suggest that the Reverb knobs Diff, Frq and Depth be changed so that Snap Isolate is turned OFF.

It is hard to describe these sounds, but some of the presets remind me of a Buchla. Great atmospheres.

Auralis is producing some lovely tones for me (though I am using it without any of the pitch randomness and using the very first preset, so I am exploring...what, 1% of the instrument? Sorry!). I have a newbie question: is it possible to record the moves I make on the 2D controller? I use Orion as a host; it will allow me to select either MIDI CCs or VST parameters for automation. Thanks for a very appealing instrument!

Unique work! I hope to see the reverb effect as a unit that i could use as an insert. Atheus

Thank you all for your comments! Glad to hear you had another look, Phil. If I remember correctly, I used the LP4 filter (or a combo) on most of the presets and mixed the filtered signal with a little bit of the clean signal (using the CMix knob). So, if you remove the clean signal completely from the mix, it will have a big impact on the sound and kill the richness in some of the presets.

i have had another look at this. it is wonderful. the random note player is really great and frees up your fingers for some sound shaping. great idea for an oscillator and a lovely filter. this is superb.

incredible. This is my first ever rating and comment for an ensemble. If i knew about this, I wouldn't have invested in a certain generative tool Brian Eno was promoting a few years ago! Beautiful work. Deeply inspiring. Thanks!

Thanks to all for your comments, some of which are so flattering I just sit here with a silly grin on my face. Glad you like it! Interesting comment, Benjamin, since I clearly remember thinking like "oh, this one clearly needs lots of reverb - wouldn't work without it" for many of the snaps I made! In the Auralis 1 snap (and many others), for example, I consider the reverb to be an important part of the sound, not an added effect. Martijn's reverb has a subtle "beating" or "pulsating" character that I like. How well a sound works, I guess depends on where it is used and how you want to be affected by it and blah, blah... Anyway, thanks for your comment. Must force myself to stop. Interesting questions arise out of your comment... :-)

Some of the presets are truly beautyfull and produce more interesting and ejoyable composition than many composers do :-)

I like this one. The only thing I'd suggest is removing the reverb. It really doesn't need it (especially with enough polyphony) and it just muddies up those interesting textures.

I can't stop listening to the presets... To my ears, they seem to have more musical logic than most randomized creations that I've heard. The colors are fantastic too. I look forward to spending a lot more time playing and playing with this instrument. Thank you for a most enjoyable (and yes, often haunting) synth--definitely deserves the highest rating.
