Reaktor 5 or lower

DESCRIPTION

Acoustring version 2.2 update info (09.10.2005):

- This version is for Reaktor 5 (and higher). If you only have Reaktor 4, please click "show other versions" under Details to the right. Then download Acoustring v2.0 (NOT Acoustring v2.1 since this contains the wrong file).

- Added a knob for controlling velocity sensitivity (VelSens) in the Post-filter section, so that you can make keyboard playing sound a bit brighter (more like the Random note player).

- Added 6 new presets (Snap 28 - 33)

-------------------------------------

Acoustring v2 update info (07.09.2003):
- I have kept all the presets from version 1.0, and they all sound the same as before. I have made some small changes to the Exciter > EQ > Pre-filter unit. I added Peak EQ (or mid frequency EQ), tiny on/off switches to each of the EQs and some new filter types. Apart from these changes the String section is the same as before.
- All presets from Acoustring 1.0 have the following in common: They all have the Reverb and the new Random note player switched ON. All other effect units are switched OFF, but I have made usefull settings in these effect units for all version 1.0 presets, so all you have to do is switch them on (I recommend testing one at a time). The effect settings for the presets are very similar, but not the settings in the Filter/Delay combo unit. Here I have used different settings for each preset to show some of it\'s capabilities.
- The main changes in version 2.0 is probably the addition of the Filter/Delay combo unit and the new Random note player (the old style have been kept also). The new style player is based on Uwe G. Hoenig\'s ugh gTrigger in the Mr. Geiger macro in his very nice ugh geigerDrum ensemble. So, thanks to him and also to Jesse Buehler, who gave me the idea to dive into this macro in the first place. I have included a Readme file (AcoustringV2readme.txt) with information about and tutorials for these two units, and some information about clock controls.
- 26 presets
- Made with Reaktor 4.0.3 on PC
-----------------------------------
Acoustring is a Physical Modeling synth based on a simple implementation of the Karplus-Strong algorithm for plucked strings. Just don\'t expect something as advanced as the excellent Steampipe by Martijn Zwartjes. I made it specifically to create sounds that sound like plucked acoustic string instruments. Although it can\'t be made to sound exactly like a specific real acoustic instrument, I\'ve tried to make it sound natural, and the presets sound kind of like mutations of real instruments (one sounds to me like a mix of a harp and a guitar). Acoustring also responds to key velocity in the sense that the string sounds slightly brighter (not only louder) when you hit a key harder.

- There are a couple of piano like presets in there, but they sound very dark and only sound \"realistic\" on higher notes.
- Features 3 string sections (which means you could make a guitar with 18 strings!). Note that the CPU load will be much greater when you use all three strings.
- The excellent reverb is made by the excellent Martijn Zwartjes. I took it from his excellent SteamPipe2D :-)
- Features a Random note player (with lots of scales) which also simulates key velocity. Nice to have running when you create snapshots.
- Reaktor 4.0.2 on PC

Luca - Go down to random note player, then right next to "Gate to voice 5-6" is an I/O button. This is the on/off toggle for the random note player, hit it once and it becomes a typical playable instrument.

Yes, it´s a fine instrument Kristian. For different colours you can change the noise building block to a noise macro by Eric Wistrand (it´s in the macro library). Enjoy more sounds!

Hallo Kristian! A PERFECT 10!! You are GENIOUS!!!! You must be a fan of Flying Saucer Attack, I am too, I have seeked for realistic acoustic guitars, and ones w/ such character as in your ensemble. No PCM synth or otherwise comes close!!! Thank you SO much for making it possible to play one of my favorite Genres of musik, amongst all the others I love w/ acoustic guitar. Perhaps others won't like it as much, but it has JUST the right sound for me. Again Many Thanks! Erik A Ingmanndsen

Thanks Kristian for your creation. Very useable to me when I run out of gas creatively. I would agree with previous users that less reverb on the presets would be a good step to improving it. Otherwise I cant complain...

Bruce, try to use the VelSens knob (Post-filter section) at different settings. If you turn the VelSens knob all the way down to 0 (zero), the velocity curve will be linear and you shouldn't need to hit the keys so hard. I'm not sure what you mean by unpredictable timbre, but since this is a physical modeling synth you'll probably never get the exact same timbre twice. I guess some presets will sometimes generate a sound that seems "out of place", but I don't know how that can be avioded.
Bruce Frazer
I would really like this insturment, except for one thing. The velocity sensitivity is very strange. It is too sensitive. I must bang on my kayboard to get a sound, but if I bang too hard I get very unpredictable timbre. Is there a way to "push all the vlocities" closer to "normal"? I tried myself, but don't really understand gate events. If 0 is off, and non-zero is velocity, how can I scale velocity without turning the gate off into gate on?

Hi Chris, Marcel and any others that want to download the correct version. I don't have the time to look into this right now, but for now please click on "show other versions" and download "Acoustring v2.0" instead. I think this is the correct version, and it is probably compatible with both R4 and R5. I am however unable to confirm this at the moment. This problem is not my fault. NI have made some changes to some ensembles in the User Library to update them to R5 only, so they must have re-uploaded the wrong file for this ensemble.

Wow, very nice! I really like this one. I was wondering if there was a possibility you could a pitch bend module to it such a way as it wouldn't affect the decay of already "plucked" notes. I tried myself, but I can't figure out how it's done. Any ideas? Anyone? Thanks!

Robert, do you mean that the Volume knob can't be turned high enough? Anyway, I have been thinking about increasing the volume range in a later update (see below). Daniel, I think you make a good point. The reason you hear a difference is that the Post-filter (Post section in the String section) handles the Random Note Player and Keyboard playing differently. So, when you play the keyboard, it may sound more muffled (softer). There are mainly two reasons for this. Firstly, I have a cheap Midi keyboard that does not handle velocity very well (I have played a real piano, so I know). Secondly, I'm not a good keyboard player, i.e. I have difficulty sensing how hard I should hit a key to get a certain velocity. These two reasons combined made me come up with a solution that basically fitted my keyboard and playing ability. If you are using Reaktor (not Session), you can experiment with "RANGE" in the "On. Vel" module in the Post section. Double-click on the "On. Vel" module, and increase the Min value (0.25 presently). Here is a simpler workaround that might help: If we take Snap 2 as an example, you'll see that the Cut knob in the Post section is at 110. Simply turn it up to 120. As I said in Comment 42, I (still) don't have much time to work with Reaktor at the moment, but I hope to update Acoustring to 2.1 within a couple of months, and then I will try to come up with a better solution to this velocity issue.

This has some gorgeous sounds! as soon as I clicked the play button i was pulled in by the quality of the sounds. but when i try to play the sounds by playing on my keyboard...the sounds are very soft? can't find a reason for this...

Think your random modul is great. I just inserted an adder and a fader modul between the pitch out of the "Random note player" and the "String section" to variate the pitch of the whole Instrument. That's enough for me ;-)
Kristian Thom
Oliver, if you are referring the Random note player, then you can't change the key. I just made it to have something playing while programming the synth. It was never meant to do the playing for you ;-) Also, the random player was for me just a fun experiment in randomization. At the moment I dont have much time to work with Reaktor, so I'm not sure when (or if I ever will) update this part of Acoustring.

Kristian, i really, *really* like this Synthesizer! aside from having a soft spot for physically modeled instruments, i am impressed by the variety and quality of the sounds it produces. and, i am extremely smitten with two things: your inclusion of user notes as a sidebar built into the synth [description & context a scrollbar away!], and your setting of the 'random walk' when the clock is started. this feature alone helps to gauge the sound of the instrument in a neutral and detached way, and that is extremely helpful. i wish more of the submissions had these two features in particular. keep on physically modelling and keep up the great work! bumping this one up in the rating department... -aqaraza

Thanks again to all for your comments! Nice also to hear that it works on OSX. NOTE: Due to some thoughtless programming on my part, the clocks in the Random note player will drift when using different rates. Note to self: use ONE clock source. Err... I won't spend time fixing this since it's not an extremely huge problem. Also, the Random note player is just an added fun gadgetry kinda thing, right?
