DESCRIPTION

The SH-1000 is an emulation of the Roland SH-1000 synthesizer first released in 1973 and which was Roland’s first synth. Its successor was the SH-2000 but that was designed to be more of a preset instrument and had far less flexibility. The SH-1000 was used by Vangelis, Blondie, The Band, Jethrow Tull, The Human League and Eddie Johnson (Roxy Music) as well as many others. This was also the first synth I owned.

It is available as a Native Instruments Reaktor or a NI Reactor Player instrument (if Player is run in demo mode).

See my website. Www.stuartpryer.co.uk for more VSTs and music applications.

Reaktor can be a VST, AU or AAX plugin.
PC /Mac Specs. Windows 7, 8 or 10 / OSX 10.8 or higher - Mac or PC - ideally >2gb ram and >2ghz processor.

Main features v 2.5

1. SH1000 comes with over 50 snapshots (programs) in 1 bank. Please lower volume when trying these as some are much louder than others.

2. I also recommend ‘Simply Fast Shots’. A Bank by Paule Amca in the NI User Library for the SH1000. This is embedded in the ensemble as bank 2.

3. I have tried to keep the instrument as the original as possible except for the settings and oscillator sections. If you use initialise snapshot 002 values it emulates the original instrument fully. The synth has info hints for all controls. You can adjust the waveform frequencies to apply slight mistune which gives a fuller sound. You can also vary the individual volume of the waveforms.

There is a Portamento switch to turn the effect on/off and you vary the amount by turning the knob like the original.

The synth has the organ style tabs below the keyboard modelled. The preset instruments tabs link to the snapshots in Reaktor – 42 to 51. You can of course change these should you wish.

The settings box and oscillator box contain enhanced features over the original. If you want just the original instrument use program 002 initialise.

In settings its possible to vary the vibrato delay (value in milliseconds) and vibrato waveform. You can also vary the Growl and Waw waveform as well as cross fade parameters.

4. Pitch – adjust in Reaktor or on Instrument for fine tuning, in cents. Like original it has option to raise or lower by 1 octave.

5. Tremolo – cyclic variation in volume – choose waveform, depth and frequency. Tabs switches on/off and waveform type sine/triangle.

6. Vibrato–cyclic variation in frequency. Choose delay in settings box (sine wave only) waveform, depth and frequency. Original had 2 waveforms. Tabs switches on/off, delay and waveform type.

Noise – adjust cutoff frequency and resonance of noise generator – select HP, BP or LP filter using LEDs. Original had just white/pink option. = HP and LP.

7. Growl – phase modulation. Waw cut off frequency modulation. Choose waveform, depth and frequency. Tab switches on/off.

8. Portamento – when polyphony set to 1 notes glide in frequency. When polyphony set higher say 2. When third note played first note glides to it. Original SH-1000 was monophonic. Switch on panel switches on/off.

9. The ADSR envelope and cut off frequency controls are modelled as faders as per the original instrument. Envelope can also control volume and cut-off frequency Filter – cut-off and resonance – filter type selectable – High Pass, Band Pass and Low pass – use yellow LEDs to select. Original was just high pass. VCF sensitivity knob added like the original. If the ADSR is used for the filter this over rides the cutoff slider. Note the instrument responds to touch sensitive keyboards (note velocity) , adjust the ADSR sliders to get the required effect.

10. Volume controls Reaktor Master Volume.

11. Polyphony 1 to 64 notes. Original monophonic. Adjust polyphony in Reaktor settings. Instrument/function/voices.

12. Oscillator section - Waveform mixer – adjusts each waveform volume and de tuning. Original on/off only.

13. Modulation wheel changes note frequency when moved up or down – use LED switch below it to activate. Original had simple glide button.

14. Playing - use PC keyboard which is polyphonic or even better your own external midi keyboard. Full 128 midi notes accessible. Three octave on-screen monophonic keyboard activated by mouse will produce sounds which are not as rich as using the computer keyboard or an external midi keyboard. Original limited to 3 octaves with pitch raise/lower by 1 octave.

15. Like Original has hold note tab which holds note until next note played.

16. See Fractal Sequencer on my website for advanced sequencer/generative music features which can be used with SH-1000. To connect use midi yoke freeware or LoopBe1 on windows or IAC driver on a Mac. Original had simple Random Note generator.

17.Program/bank load and save. There are 128 available program slots in Reaktor for a Bank. Original had no option to save or load settings.

18.Midi enabled – Original no midi.

19. Version 2.4 - has updated sound presets which are closer to the original. Fixed bug when changing presets. Added tool tips (info) for all controls. Version 2.5 added a couple of presets and bug fixes.

20. Can be used as a plugin in via Reaktor in a host - Logic, Bitwig, Sonar, Cubase, Cantibile, Ambleton etc. Host DAW controls the audio and Midi parameters.

21. Multiple instances of synth can be run if Reaktor is used as a plugin.

23.For plugin place Reaktor.xxx in your normal virtual instrument folder.

Hi Mario. I would start off using a 32' waveform and play with the cutoff and resonance sliders. Adjust the ADSR amp envelope as required. Im not familiar with the song you mention but hopefully thats a start. cheers Stuart

Hi Javier. I did reply to you. But the presets are just snapshots in Reaktor. So you can edit them and save them. They are snapshots 42 to 51. Cheers stu

Hi Stuart, I'm not pretty sure if you're checking your NI Account daily anyway I also sent you an email with some questions, Is there any possibility that 10 factory presets from Physical SH 1000 sound closer in your emulation version? thanks and cheer! I'm really appreciated man.

Version 2.3c corrects a bug in the crossfade routing. so without crossfade the left and right channels are the same. With crossfade on, the left and right channels have different filtering. Thanks to Jasper for spotting this. cheers Stuart

I need to explain the crossfade left and right channel difference. With crossfade on the left and right channels have their own resonance filter, growl and waw modulator and high/bandpass/low filter. The only common control is the cutoff fader. This is what gives this implimentation of crossfade more depth. Cheers stuart

Hi Jasper. Is the left and right channel difference with crossfade on or off? With cross fade on it will be different. Cheers stuart

Hi Paule. Its a pleasure. Ive got some more features to add to complete the instrument to make it as close to the original as possible. Also im going to do some more work on snapshots. Its been a fascinating project. I sold my SH1000 in 1980 and always wanted another. I never dreamed i could create a virtual version until 3 years ago. Ive cretaed a vst version and now recreated one in Reaktor! Cheers Stuart

Hi everyone. Version 2.2k. Ive added the original instruments preset tabs along the bottom and made a few minor tweaks to the instrument panel. No changes to Paule Amca's - simply fast shots. Hope you like it! cheers Stuart Pryer. www.stuartpryer.co.uk

Hi everyone. Ive now uploaded version 22i. This has the ADSR and filter knobs replaced by faders like the real instrument. Also grey tab switches at the bottom added for vibrato and tempo waveforms like the real instrument. Thanks Paule for your suggestions on faders and switches. Quick question. What is the easiest way to pick a snapshot using a switch on the instrument. Is it to use a midi program change messages or is there another way? Cheers Stuart
Paule

Stuart, there is a 3pos_switch. Load in a vertical fader and set a connection to the switch. The switch must be unvisible. Show scale/groove on fader set to unvisible also.

Hi Paule. I beat you to it and created the coloured switches already in photoshop. Thank you so much for doing this as yours may be better. However i now need the toggle switches 2 outputs plus 3 outputs. Plus sliders as per the original instrument :-) fancy having a go? Thanks again fir your support. Stuart

Okay, I finished the snapshot bank up to 128. We misunderstood about the mouse over's. Meaning mouse over value/text like in Blocks. Have a look there. It changed the text to value when you point the mouse over it.

Hi Paule, I have checked and the info hints are there? But remember to turn them on in Reaktor 6. Show info hints. Ive edited the synth and uploaded it so that the Oscillator buttons are spaced further apart. Hopefully that is better. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. Stuart

Stuart, in v2.2a are no mouse over hints. Do you upload a wrong version? The spyweb are the switch entrys (in). Please change it in prevs view and adjust the switches.

Stuart, it's a bit tricky to use the osc switches. They layered with frames to the neighbours. Try it. Switch every off and on. It's like a spyweb. I adjust the first 30 ssf to v22a. They sound different to v1. The other will follow soon.

Hi everyone. I am about to carry on developing the SH1000. Version 2 will be updated using Reaktor 6 in mac osx sierra. Im intending to fix some bugs, remove some extended features, as the concensus is keep it original as possible. I will keep the settings box for some extended features but users only uses these if they want to go beyond what the original instrument did. Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated. For instance Mikael wanted buttons or tabs for the waveforms. Cheers stuart www.stuartpryer.co.uk

Hi Mikael, sorry for not replying sooner. Ive had my laptop fail because its mother board died. Now using an old Acer netbook, not up to Reaktor spec. Not sure when I can afford a laptop so my development is on hold. If you want one waveform the knobs for the waveforms are just volume controls. The original was on or off. This version you can vary between 0 and 100% volume for each waveform. I could add white /pink noise by adding a filter. I could also remove functions to make it more original. Some prefer one approach, some the other. Thank you for your comments. Stuart

I love the sound of the original SH-1000, this emulation has potential indeed, thank you for your hard work! :) Since the user interface is different from the original it's a bit hard to emulate the workflow. I would love to see a version with the extra functions removed and buttons / tabs for waveforms. Now I don't know what settings to use to closest emulate the original. I'm trying to make preset that would have just one waveform enabled and all the settings would be like on the original. This emulation only has white noise right (no pink noise)?

Hi Herwig. I have designed it so the user can run it as an emulation or switch on extra features not found on the original. Obviously the original did not have midi. The detuners create the richer sound of an analog synth. The extra growl and waw controls can be switched off. So its flexible but can be set up as the original. Sorry for the 404 error. I uploaded the .ens but it seems to not be there. Will sort out now. Cheers stuart

Is it still an emulation of SH-1000 or SH-3000 xxl? ;) so i think an emulation has to be an emulation, nothing more. I know an expanded version is nice, perhaps you should rename? (BTW: 404 error)

Hi Panos, Thank you for your comment. Here is version 1.9. Bottom right knob controls pulse width of pulse oscillators. Growl and was now separate for left and right channels which can produce lovely stereo field. Switch between mono or stereo provided. Paule Amca's Simply Fast Shots is fully compatible. Ive provided 46 snapshots in 1 bank as well. Have fun. Stuart

Hi Paule, Ive just taken a look and you are correct. The 0 value in the filter does not need a constant as any disconnected input is treated as 0 anyway. Ive also changed the key macro to mono and have the pseudo 3d effect with the keys. Thank you. Stuart

Hi, Ive just uploaded version 1.5. This now has ADSR applied to the cutoff filter like the original. You can turn off this effect by 'pressing' the bottom yellow button in the ADSR panel. So ADSR is just applied to the Amp. Cheers Stuart Suggestions welcome. I will add more snapshots when the instrument is finished.
Paule

There is something I don't understand: Inside the keyboard > keys 1-5 > Multipicture get a red cross on select in every macro. For myself I change the macro keyboards to mono and can use the keyboard in pseudo 3-D and the merger inside for pitch and gate to poly. The mixer LFO waw and LFO Growl has a constant zero to cutoff frequency 2-pole filter. In my own version are no constants, just deleted them.

Hi. Ive redone Growl using a triangular wave applied to the cut off frequency. Better now. Ive reduced the output volume to remove leakage when waves volume set at 0. A few other tidy ups behind the scenes.

Hi Lars. thanks for your feedback. I will reduce the minimum levels of the waveforms as suggested. I'll take a look at Growl. Yes the original had preset instruments which could be created as a snapshot in Reaktor. The SH 2000 had presets/switches for the filters also, from memory, which gave far less control of the output. I'm in the process of adding more snapshots and editing the schematic when the kids go to bed:-) cheers Stuart

If you hear your noise preset you still hear waveform sounds. The minimun level of those knobs is to high. Also i find the growl is not working well. Not much like growl. Especially on the saw waveforms it's not working well. Growl was used much with brass sounds i believe. Thanks for your contribution. More Snap's will be appriciated. Btw - I believe the original did have preset's. Not only the sh-2000. http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/sh1000.php Haven't voted yet.

Just updated ensemble. Found bug with one control - pitch -affecting another - cutoff freq. - even though they had different ID's? And were not connected otherwise in the schematic. Possibly related to snapshots. So I initialised bank and added 2 new presets. Stuart

Hi everyone, Ive just updated the synth to version 1.1. Ive added individual detuning knobs for the oscillators to make the sound richer. Except one 8' which is the master. Ive modified the knob style to Roland SH1000. Also fixed two bugs where the first snapshot was based on an earlier design and the Volume control affected the filters.
