ARTIST FEATURE - MARK DE CLIVE-LOWE

Ignited by a love of playing piano since the age of four, Mark de Clive-Lowe is one of the most innovative producers and live performers active in today’s international music scene. He is an artist, producer, composer, pianist, performer, live remixer, and worldwide educator whose skill is underscored by a rare sonic sensibility – an accomplished musician taking his jazz roots far beyond convention.

RECENT PROJECTS

Mark’s latest album, CHURCH was developed during his Los Angeles and New York City CHURCH club residency, blending improvised elements of the jazz club, a dancefloor aesthetic, live remixing, and a live band. His recent resume also includes giving workshops on MASCHINE and music production and remixing Blue Note recordings, as well as being a keynote speaker on the ‘Technology in Music’ panel at the Rhodes Forum Dialogue of Civilizations in Greece.

WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS

Mark is also an active collaborator, sharing his talents with diverse artists such as Ethio Cali, Pino Palladino (D'Angelo), Chris Dave (D'Angelo/Robert Glasper), and Leon Ware (Marvin Gaye), as well as labels like Verve, Impulse, MAW Records (Masters At Work), 2000 Black, Tru Thoughts, and his own Mashibeats imprint.

DE CLIVE-LOWE WORKFLOW

“Sometimes I start out sitting at the piano or Rhodes composing melody and harmony. Other times I’ll start jamming on MASCHINE then take that idea into my DAW for further development. Since getting a KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series keyboard, I’ll often have a template on the DAW with blank KOMPLETE KONTROL software instances ready to go – I can work really fast and there’s very little friction for my ideas to become reality.”

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

“I’m putting together some new albums. One is electronic and the other features a live band that brings in the jazz roots. I’m talking with Madlib and Atjazz about doing some music together. Touring is also a big part of my life – I love taking my music to people around the planet. And I love music education – ‘each one teach one’ is part of my artistic philosophy and responsibility. It’s vital that I can pass on some of my knowledge to the next generation.”
