INSIDE ODESZA’S CREATIVE PROCESS

Find out how Seattle electronic duo ODESZA take inspiration from their surroundings, and harness the power of mistakes to help forge their distinctive sound.

EXPLOSIVE SUCCESS

In seemingly no time, Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight emerged from a Washington basement to conquer the US dance charts and the world’s biggest festival stages. The sudden success of ODESZA lies in the near-universal appeal of their unique sound: Through a forward-thinking and technology-driven process, the pair distill their eclectic musical influences, together with the unique vibe of their Pacific Northwest location, into upbeat electronic music that strikes a chord with listeners around the globe.

HAPPY ACCIDENTS

By capturing and embracing the happy accidents inherent to their free-flowing creative process, Mills and Knight craft refreshingly authentic moments that would be impossible to plan in advance. Whether it’s an accidental effect, or a fumbled melody, the pair are never afraid to follow their ears: If it sounds good, it is good. These moments of serendipity often provide the most interesting springboards from which new ideas, or even entire tracks, begin to take shape.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Seattle’s unique natural setting both inspires and enables ODESZA’s musical output. With MASCHINE and KOMPLETE at the core of their design-centric home studio, Mills and Knight have everything they need to sketch out new ideas before tweaking, resampling, and layering them into a final track. But the Northwest is only where the story starts: Once the tracks are done, the pair turn their attention to the road, adapting their productions for the epic live shows that ODESZA is famed for.
