GRIP
• is an instrument between sampler and synth
• is based on Reaktor's Grain Cloud module
• is a late successor to my "Travelizer" from the NI library
• offers a nice set of samples and presets
• can be played polyphonically from a MIDI keyboard or other controllers, including MPE controllers
• comes with a Lemur template for Lemur on iPad
• produces a great variety of sounds, depending on the samples and settings
• offers extensive and some rather unique modulation possibilities
• can also be used with live audio input

Some tech specs
• granular synthesis based on pre-loaded samples or live input
• up to 30 simultaneous grains per voice
• granular parameters include pitch, pitch slide, position, legth, distance, gain, envelope and various jitter parameters
• can use stereo samples, signal path is stereo throughout
• live audio in is mono only (will be stereo soon)
• LP/BP/HP filter (stereo)
• two LFOs, polyphonic
• four envelope generators, polyphonic
• one envelope follower, polyphonic
• two random generators, polyphonic
• a reverb (taken from "Prism"), polyphonic (yes!) and with modulatable reverb time
• a simple delay effect with feedback
• the panel includes many LEDs for visualizing the modulations, this layout is made for six-voice polyphony

Requirements
• Reaktor 5.9.2 or newer
• GRIP can be quite CPU-intensive; reduce the instrumet's voices if you encounter crackles etc.
• a current-generation i5/i7 cpu is recommended for 6-voice polyphony (GRIP's default)

-------------------------------------------------------
To play GRIP
- use GRIP as a plugin instance or stand-alone, both work fine
- start the clock in Reaktor stand alone / the playback of your DAW (as GRIP uses the clock for various modulations)
- select the GRIP instrument, choose a preset bank and a preset
- feed it some MIDI note, modwheel and aftertouch data
Tip: Start with panel "B" which shows only the most important parameters and makes it easier to explore them

To go a little deeper
- try the BIG knobs first when tweaking presets
- try choosing other samples for a given preset (with the big Sample knob under the ugh logo) – and load your own samples
- right click on the white label bar above the sample display to access the sample map and to load samples
- activate Reaktor's info function to get some mouseover info for the knobs etc.
- see the info on the "G R I P" label next to the ugh logo for a list of modulation sources
- see the info on the "Grain Cloud Synth" label for some more info regarding modulation
- get familiar with the modulation slots that you find all across the panel, see next section
- if your keyboard sends poly pressure, try replacing "CPress" (channel pressure) modulation sources with "PP1" (poly pressure); you need to send notes and poly pressure on MIDI channel 1 for this to work

To change or set up modulations
- each modulation slot consists of two flip menus, an intensity parameter, an on/off switch and six LEDs for the six voices
- each flip menu selects a modulation source, the two sources get multiplied (think of sidechaining: Modwheel controls LFO to pitch mod)
- choose a mod source in one menu and "On" in the other for a simple modulation without sidechaining
- set the mod intensity by dragging on the value field and switch the modulation on (with the small round switch)

To use live audio instead of samples
- use "Reaktor FX" as insert effect on an audio track
- activate the "Live" switch in the lower left corner
- the "Sample" frame is replaced by an "Audio In" frame
- feed Reaktor some audio, check and set recording level
- choose something like "1/8" to trigger the amp envelope
- recording is active as soon as you enter live mode; use "Freeze" to halt it
- recorded audio CANNOT be stored with presets
- recorded audio is LOST when switching between sample and live in mode

----------------------------------------------------

Version history

1.9 (2018-03-13)
Includes some adaptions for using GRIP with Komplete/Maschine. Big thanks to Stephen Wey for this! He writes:
- reduced the automation IDs in the easy panel to ones that KK can use (they were far too high)
- added a built in mapping for KK/Maschine with organised tabs,
- added meta tags for the presets so KK can 'see' it as an instrument synth
- applied the mapping to all snapshots. It's all built into the ens - people just need to import it.

1.8 (2018-03-07)
- When related to note pitch information, "Distance" now also receives pitch values including glide (portamento), rather than only the current note numbers.

1.7 (2018-01-29)
- GRIP now offers support for MPE controllers like Linnstrument and Roli Seaboard.
Use the MPE switch in the bottom left corner to activate it. Leave it off if you don't use an MPE controller. With MPE, pitch bend, channel pressure and CC 74 are received separately for each voice, which allows for more expression. If MPE is on, GRIP expects notes which are distributed across midi channels 2 to 7 while midi channel 1 serves as the basic channel.

The switch labeled "CC 74>1" below the MPE switch routes CC 74 ("Slide" or "Timbre" in MPE-speak, sent from all MPE controllers) to GRIP's "ModWheel" (CC 1) modulation inputs. In other words: CC 74 is treated as modulation wheel, which makes it very easy to adapt existing presets (which usually use ModWheel for some modulation) to MPE. Simply activate both buttons and play through the snapshots with your MPE controller to see how they respond. Bank 7 features some new sounds which were made with MPE in mind, start with those.
When MPE is on, the pitch bend range parameter changes to offer you 24 or 48 semitones of pitch bend range.

Both switches, "MPE" and "CC 74>1", as well as the MPE pitch bend range parameter are considered system settings and are NOT stored with the presets.

- New modulation sources:
Rel Vel: release velocity (only a few midi keyboards but all MPE controllers send this)
CC 74: midi controller 74, which is sent by all MPE controllers. See the note above for routing this to "ModWheel".
Inverse: this corresponds to "-1" and is meant to inverse the source that is chosen in the other mod input slot

- The "Gain Dir" switch now offers a new option "auto" for the grain playback direction. With "auto", grains are played forward if the playhead moves from left to right, and backwards, if the playhead moves from right to left. This allows for more natural and smoother scrubbing effects.

- The Amp Envelope now has a "steady" switch. Activate it if you want to "bypass" the amp envelope (meaning that its output is set to max all the time). This can be useful for live mode or if you plan to use channel pressure to modulate gain, for a more bowed than plucked loudness control.

1.6 (2018-01-16)
- disables the workaround from v1.5 and includes a different approach to avoid the pitch bug

1.5 (2018-01-14)
- Includes a workaround for the annoying pitch bug ("new note starts with the pitch of a previous note"). The workaround removes this unwanted behaviour in most cases. Please ler me know via comments if it works for you.

1.4 (2017-12-27)
- GRIP now offers an EASY mode: on panel "B" only the most important parameters are visible, which makes it easier and more convenient to explore them. You can switch between panel B or A at any time to get the reduced and "easy" view or acces to all parameters, respectively. Panel B is also a good starting point if you don't plan to use many modulations but want to automate GRIP's knobs from your DAW.
To start making a new sound on panel B, please select a snapshot template from the "EASY" bank. These snapshots are tailored to panel B and have all the invisible modulations turned off.

1.3 (2016-06-27)
- cleaned up automation IDs
- included a more useful default preset
- fixed some small things

1.2 (2014-11-02)
- GRIP now includes a Lemur template (iPad) for performing with the synth. The template can send five independent MIDI poly pressure signals to the synth (on five different MIDI channels) which allows for very expressive per-note modulations. Two of the poly pressure signals are generated with "RoboKnobs" from SAVEAS which can record, play back and loop knob movements (see here: https://liine.net/en/community/user-library/view/467/). More info on how to set up and use the Lemur template can be found in a Read me file in the ZIP.
- the modulation source menus in GRIP now includes PP1 ... PP6 for six poly pressure streams (on MIDI channel 1...6). These entrys moved to the end of the sources list. If you made presets using the older PP1...PP3 entrys, these assignments now show up as "dummy 1...3". Please change these to the new PP entrys (besides that, all presets are full compatible with version 1.2). The "dummy" entrys and PP6 are reserved for future use.
- added some presets for the Lemur to get you started
- the bank "21010" with live in presets from Bernd Kreil was added (thanks!)
- the non-working modulation entrys for "Freeze" (in live in mode) were fixed
- the sine oscillator in the Sample frame now receives pitch bend

1.1 (2014-03-29)
- some new presets, optimized some presets
- added preset bank "201228" from Bernd Keil with 42 new sounds (thanks!)
Improved live input mode:
- added 20 presets for live input mode
- feedback now works when GRIP is set to more than one voice
- live input mode can operate in strereo now; the wave display shows only the left channel
- a small switch in the Audio in frame enables stereo mode (this increases CPU load, so activate only when needed)
- can also work polyphonically now; each voice gets the same audio from the outside, but its own feedback signal. To save CPU, use 1 voice unless you REALLY want live input mode to work polyphonically.
- feedback now has a switch for cross feedback and a modulation slot for feedback intensity
- added some modulation sources for Freeze

1.0.1 (2014-03-19)
- Fixes the lousy panning (balance) implementaion of v1.0 – NOW the samples play in stereo and pan jitter works. Expect broader sounds. :-) Thanks, Paul!

1.0 (2014-03-17)
- Initial release

Hi, Thanks for this nice granular synth. And so many controles. I think I have discovered how to use most of them. I cant’t figure out though how to manage the multi voiced LFO’s for each voice seprately. Thanks for your advice. Kind regards. Herman

Greetings and thanks for this creation! I believe this synth is MPE. I use Sensel Morph. Not so much finding an MPE ON switch or where one controls the various expression elements. Mark

thank you for this amazing instrument! can anyone tell me please how can i change the number of voices? my cpu is at 45-50%, but the sound clips. anyone with the same issue? how can i solve this?

Fantastic granular synth. It's really, really good. The only thing missing.... (that most other grains synths miss too) is filtering per grains. With some randomness, filtering per grains can create very unique and organic sounds. Imagine if Grip had that too...

This is probably a stupid question, but I just downloaded this plug in but unsure exactly where to reduce the number of voices. I'm currently stuck at 6 voices. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I would manipulate this value?

Dear Herman, thank you for your kind words. Of course I want to look into the problem you mention, but I don't understand it. You wrote "the needle is jumping from 1 to a number according to the velocity". What needle? And what number? It would be great if you could give me some more details. Thanks a lot, best, Uwe

Hi Uwe, First off i want to say that i'm in love with your GRIP! Every modulation you can think of is in your instrument. I can't stop experimenting with it!. Congrats. But allow me to draw your attention to a minor malfunction (unless i'm doing something wrong): After shutting down all the modulation params in the "distance " section, and when hitting the key F3 on my keyboard (also tested with another keyboard= same result) the needle is jumping from 1 to a number according to the velocity i struck the key with... I hope helping with my comment to get your creation even better. Thanks again for sharing it! Gr. Herman

Hi Brett, Reaktor also has a button for opening the sample map editor (top part of the GUI, somewhere to the right...), you can use that as well. The other way is opening it using the context menu on the white label bar above the waveform display.

Hello Uwe, i am testing out the current version and i do not immediately notice the pitch bug discussed previously. i think it might be corrected. i've not noticed anything else in regard to this change, since i hadn't tried to create any projects with this instrument yet (any other changes are too subtle for me to notice). Thanks for this change!

Hello Uwe, now it sounds again like AmbieGarde. Zhank you.
Uwe G. Hoenig

Hi Paule, I noticed some similar weirdness ("Inverse" with mod value of 127) in some presets after uploading v 1.9. I also noticed that the sine osc got wrong pitch information. So I corrected those things and uploaded again, maybe half an hour later. Still as v 1.9. Please try to download this version again and see if it solves the problems.
Paule
Uwe, in v1.4 my snaps works. Example 'mices on th run' has a sample mod on value 127 dummy 1 (is now inverse). v1.9: If switched to off Modulation one it works in the old manner. Second the osc sound: Sine Octv in middle position must set to zero. In your own snaps from bank one it's the same! If you set Inverse to off and SineOctv to zero - all is fine. I correct all snapshots from bank 1 and two - I load them up - you can take over
Uwe G. Hoenig
Stephen, I uploaded your adapted version as v1.9. Thank you very much for this contribution!
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Paule, the sound might come from the sine oscillator in Grip and you samples seem to be missing. Open the sample map editor and check if they are shown in red. If so, load them again, then activate "embed" next to each sample entry in order to store the samples within the ens. Hope this helps.
Paule

Uwe, since this year in most of my snapshots is no sample available and a nasty continous sound accompanied the nothing.

Great I took down the link I'm following the guidelines I put together in this thread: https://www.native-instruments.com/forum/threads/reaktor-ensemble-integration.325531/ Really this may be worth all future Reaktor developers following as it makes it easier to integrate Reaktor into the Komplete/maschine ecosystem

Sure, I didn't want to post it myself as these are minor changes really, just reduced the automation IDs in the easy panel to ones that KK can use (they were far too high), then added a built in mapping for KK/Maschine with organised tabs, added meta tags for the presets so KK can 'see' it as an instrument synth, and then applied the mapping to all snapshots. It's all built into the ens - people just need to import it. I'll pm you the link.

Hi Stephen, thank you for your offer! I wouldn't want to maintain two versions, but we could make your modification the new "official" one. Is it based on v 1.8? And could you post a (temporary) download link, so I can take a look?

How do you set inertia please?
Uwe G. Hoenig
PS: When you switch snapshots, high "Inertia" values can cause some kind of value crossfade for their respective parameter (between the old and the new snap). This has nothing to do with the portamento effect you like to achieve.
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Denzel, I think the reason for your problems was bad design on my side. Please try v 1.8 to see if things have improved. But please keep in mind that "Distance" - not "Pitch" – can determine the perceived pitch when small distance values are used. If you want to apply portamento to distance in such cases, you need to set the Distance grid to something note related (like "Note Octaves").
Denzel Cromwell
*that isn't portamento
Denzel Cromwell
My favorite instrument in the user library, but im having a little trouble with utilizing portamento when put in my own samples. When i turn the glide up next to the keytrack button in pitch (as well as inertia), i hear no effect. But when I save my project then open again, i hear some sort of gliding effect this isn't portamento, but then that goes away after the sequence loops once. Would reallly appreciate some help with this. Using Logic Pro X btw. Thanks

Did try it with my Eigenharp Pico. Using breath to control the filter’s cutoff frequency along with gain. Works like a charm. Will still require practice and exploration for me to use it in a more serious way. But it’s viscerally fun to play with sound in this way.

Wow. Excellent work! You’ve really surpassed yourself, Uwe! There aren’t many MPE-savvy synths out there, at this point, but this might be one of the most creative. Funnily enough, around the time you were releasing 1.7, ended up participating in a music-focused Maker Faire as the “Symphony Hack Lab” surrounding family concerts at the National Arts Centre. Should have set up GRIP with a Lightpad Block so kids could discover the wonders of playing with sound. There should be other events like this and will probably get some knobs in there as well. Wasn’t getting MPE to work, at first. Hadn’t read the release notes in the RTF and wasn’t noticing the MPE. Also had the issue with the number of voices until noticing, in the ensemble, that it was set to six MPE channels. The MPE-friendly patches really do help. Nice job there as well! Will surely explore this ensemble more extensively, including with my Eigenharp Pico. Apart from providing us with one of the most unique instruments around, my sincere hope is that your work will inspire other people to start adding MPE to their ensembles. Since Reaktor ensembles are pretty much self-documenting (and the MPE support doesn’t sound incredibly complicated to add), that could really open up a new world. Thanks again!!
Greg Killmaster

Thanks for Thala, I finally got this to work. Turns out I had the voices set to 16 in stead of 8. Once I set my keyboard to 8 voices, everything snapped into place. This ensemble is such a great step unique step and for me the expression controls make this really pretty special! Thank you!

Hi Chris, thanks for your report. Please try the following to see if improves the loudness of the first grain: Open the ens structure and go into the macro "Controllers" (upper left corner). Look for the "AMP ENVELOPE" macro there and go inside. You will see an AR envelope which has a constant of "0" attached to its A input. Change the value of that constant to "-100". And try again... does that work for you?
Chris Phan
Thanks for the update! Here's my report for version 1.7: - Amp ADSR is great now. Very snappy, but: - The first triggered grain is very quiet? This is only noticeable when both length and distance are set to relatively high. It even shows in the LED display. The first grain triggers a duller light compared to the ones afterwards. - Sample display occasionally disappears? Not a big deal though because it still makes sound when that happened to me. Other than that, it's great. I didn't notice any left-right channel imbalance either.

Hi Uwe, I checked again and still the same thing for me here. after a short time, the note response seems laggy and non responsive. I reset everything and started fresh in Reaktor standalone. With Midi Monitor open, I can see all the correct messages are sent. And it works fine in Equator. All axis getting passed to my mac including release velocity. Wonder if it could be mac related?
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Greg, thank you for your feedback. I checked again, and CC 74 works fine here, either when used as CC 74 or when mapped to ModWheel. Same with pitch bend/Glide. This is in Reaktor stand-alone. How are you playing the ens, in a DAW? Is it possible that there is some midi buffer overflow happening in your setup which causes midi dropouts...? Thanks again!
Greg Killmaster
oops, I meant to say that Slide parameter doesn't seem to work, even when its mapped to modulation.
Greg Killmaster
Wow! Great to see! For me, using Seaboard RISE, Glide (pitchbend) works when I switch to a new preset, but then stops working once I play another axis. Seems to be the case when its mapped to modulation as well. In some cases, its stops responding to my playing entirely. Then intermittently starts again, seemingly randomly. And I can't confirm that Slide (y-axis) is working or not. Would be great to have indicator showing that its receiving MPE input as I play the Seaboard (or Linnstrument). Thank you! So great to see you moving this foward!! Be happy to be a guinea pig if need be...
Uwe G. Hoenig

Ok, so here is version 1.7 with MPE support, tested with a Seaboard Blocks. I hope this works well for you, let me know if you find anything strange. I have added some more little things, see the version history below. Amp Env behaviour should be better now as well. Have fun!
Thala Estra

and yes, Y/Timbre (CC74) is Linnstrument/Bitwig speech :) this will be so awesome. it already is with out MPE... could you please add a switch to the AMP envelope section, which knocks out the ADSR completly and will take the channel aftertouch for "Amping" the Volume instead? this enables bowed alike sounds, and is at least on my Linn very good playable! just multiply the Volume by pressure, this works fine everywhere so far :)
Thala Estra

Hi Thala, if you refer to CC 74 (or "Slide" in Roli-speak), yes. Do you think it's ok to fix the pitch bend range to 48 semitones in MPE mode? Or is there a need to choose between 24 and 48 semitones?

Consistently impressed by this ensemble. As usual, thank you so much for your good work, Uwe! Still wish this were a standalone product. Would make for a very useful AUv3 plugin on iOS. Even when overwhelming the CPU (not too hard to do on a 2012 MacBook Pro), it ends up sounding pretty neat, at least with some of the glitchier samples. A suggestion or feature request: MPE support? Could make for some fun musicking (or performance). Shouldn’t be too hard as there are some Reaktor ensembles meant specifically for MPE. Originally tried this ensemble assigning knobs on an Alesis Vmini controller to a few controls. But it could make even more sense with my ROLI Lightpad or Eigenharp Pico. Will also try with the Leap Motion and Geco. Might even assign breath control and a dancemat to some of the virtual knobs. Altogether, the controls (especially with the “B panel”) lead to just the right type of audible result. So, assigning all sorts of controllers can be really inspiring.

Thanks Uwe this works also. But wouldn't be nice also instead of using only lfo to achieve this ,to have this speed knob ? this way can modulate smoother the speed from forward to backward,or freeze the sound and to start from this speed when it resets by note.Anyway for now i m happy also as it is :)
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Vagelis, what you describe does not need a speed knob, but can be done via modulating the position with an LFO. See the snapshot "EASY with LFO on Position" in the EASY bank for a starting point. In short: - Choose an LFO as mod input in the Position section, switch the modulation on and set the intensity to "1" (which means: travel through the entire sample, of course you could use another intensity). - On the LFO, choose if you want to sync it to the beat and set "Note" as source for retriggering. Stay with the triangle wave (fader to the left), set the desired rate and use the "Sym" parameter to choose between rising sawtooth (plays forward in the sample), triangle (back and forth) or falling sawtooth (backwards). This should do what you want.

Hi Uwe,I didn't explain well about midi note sorry!.What i wanted to say is when the note is triggered, to start playing the sample from start depending on which value is the speed-position knob and when the note ends to stop playing the sample. Also another nice option for experimenting could be to loop continuously, no matter the note length.

Hi Vagelis, thanks for your feedback. A knob like you describe it is something I already want to do in a future update. But how should "when is triggered with midi note it could read the sample at different speed from start to end depending on length of midi note" work? To determine playback speed I would need to know the length of the midi note at the moment it starts... and before it ends. Maybe I don't understand it right, could you explain?
Vagelis M
Thank you for this ! Really nice and clean granular modulations, enjoying! One request if is possible to add another mode for position with a knob that could read position forward on the right,in the middle to freeze, and left to go backwards? Will be very useful for stretching sound and controlling better the position except the lfo or envs.Plus when is triggered with midi note it could read the sample at different speed from start to end depending on length of midi note. Thanks!

Chris, thank you for your feedback. The amp envelope behaviour you describe is in fact related to my change, because the envelope feeds the Amp input of the Grain Cloud module now, instead of being routed to a amp that follows the module. This way, the envelope controls the volume of each grain at the time it is started. This has two effects: the volume of the actual grains is driven to zero when a voice fades out (because of amp env release), which seems to be the key for avoiding the pitch bug. But it also means that the amp envelope's resolution now depends on the grain length: only when a new grain starts, the env value gets read. Once it is playing, the amp env doesn't effect it. I should probably feed the env directly to the grain cloud module but also to an amp following it to get both, proper pitch and snappiness. I'll try to optimize this for the next version.

Don't be sorry for the update spam. Your work is immensely appreciated. I feel like I'm the real bug spammer here.
Chris Phan
I think it's finally been fixed, congrats!! But did it come at the expense of less snappy Amp ADSR (especially the Attack and Release)? I also notice that the very first grain now tends to sound much softer than the ones coming afterwards. It's more noticeable when Distance is set to high, together with a fast Amp Attack. Please find an example of what I'm describing here: https://goo.gl/k8SZP7

Hi, I think I finally found a way to avoid those pitch blips... Chris? @Giorgio: will investigate. A higher cpu load (and better sound) might result from using the "Link2Distnc" mode for the Length parameter – because I increased the max value to allow for more overlapping grains. But this shouldn't affect cpu load for sounds which use another Length scale.

Uwe G. Hoenig

@Chris: every voice starts with the pitch it had when it was last triggered and plays that pitch for a short time (one or several grains..). So yes, it is related to the voices and varies with the chosen voice assignment scheme.
Paule

Chris Phan

Given that your instrument allows for 6-voice polyphony, I feel like that might be related somehow? Perhaps if the first voice hasn't finished its release phase, playing the 7th voice will confuse it? However, even when I turn the release all the way down, the problem still persists so I'm not sure. Also, when I play slowly enough, the problem doesn't happen. I hope that helps
Chris Phan
Thank you, Uwe. Unfortunately the problem persists for me, but I think I might have found more clues for your investigation. After playing around a little more, I find that the "random pitch" always starts at the 7th voice. For example, when I play C-D-E-F-G-A-B, the problem always starts at the B, and it's not random but starts all over from the 1st voice (the C) and repeats what I play. Here's a visualization in case that didn't make sense: https://pasteboard.co/H2VPfeq.jpg

Chris, I took a look at Frame 3, but this instrument has only one grain allowed (overlap in the grain cloud module properties set to "1"). You can do the same with Grip, and this removes the pitch glitch. But it also completely alters the sound, because there is no grain "cloud" then, just one lonely grain at a time which produces a very thin and "rrrrobotic" sound....
Chris Phan
I don't know if this will help, but Frame 3 is also a grain cloud-based ensemble and I don't find it to have any pitch problem: https://reaktortips.com/2013/05/frame-3-free-creative-sampler-for.html Also, this is unrelated but Reason's new granular synth is really neat and I think you might be interested: https://youtu.be/Mb4EEWedQKM
Chris Phan
That's unfortunate because GRIP seems like the most powerful granular synth that I can find, including non-Reaktor paid VSTs. I hope you'll be able to have the problem sorted someday. I personally will be happy to pay for that.
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Chris, ok, I see. You ran into the annoying bug which already had been mentioned in earlier comments: the first grain of a new note starts with the pitch setting of the previous note. I tried to solve this, but failed. It seems to be a bug in the grain cloud module. I'll try again to find a workaround, but can't promise anything. :-( Shorter grains make this effect less noticeable, that's right. And you can play around with the instrument voice asssign modes (oldest/neweset/nearest) to see which one suits your Grip usage best. In the case of your arpeggio, "newest" might lead to better results, but has the drawback of triggering the same first voice again for the following notes, so the notes don't have a proper release behaviour.
Chris Phan
The same thing happens in EASY with some jitter, I should add
Chris Phan
Thank you for the quick reply. I tried what you said and still had no luck. Here's an audio example of what I described: https://soundcloud.com/keyxmusic/grip/s-rKu56 You can hear that besides the main voice playing up the scale, then down the scale, there are other random voices popping up in no predictable order. When I loop this in my DAW it also tends to give me different results each time.I'm new to granular synthesis so I'm not sure if this kind of behavior is expected? That was the B Panel Default preset, but the same behavior still happened with my own imported samples and many other presets. Preset ugh 1:17: Forman to go is one of a few I found that didn't introduce random harmonics. I think in general it helps to have short grain length, which makes me wonder if pitch key-tracking finds it difficult to process long grains with different pitches? That's just a guess as I'm no programmer.
Uwe G. Hoenig

@ jace, regarding the pitch bug: I think that the bug is known, but I'll try to set up a small demo ens to report it.
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Chris, please try varying the values for Distance and Length. The default patch is an useful starting template, technically, but somewhat shitty, musically... It might be better to start playing around with the second EASY bank snapshot, "EASY with some jitter". Hope this helps.
Chris Phan
Thank you for your work. When I load up the Easy panel Default patch, and play a C major scale for example, I find the timbre of each notes to be different, and the harmonics don't move up and down consistently. Is there a setting for this? The playback indicator lights up at different cells when I play different notes so I assume it might be something tied to that. Thank you

Regarding the Grain Cloud module pitch bug (see below), is it something that needs to be fixed by Native Instruments? If yes, has it been reported to them? i've begun importing my own samples to play with this ensemble and the pitch envelop problems of this bug is really driving me batty. "Regarding "the release of the previous note, ends up in the attack of the new note": this is a bug in the Grain Cloud module. This is a fantastic ensemble. It's very playable and has a near infinite variety of sounds, depending on samples used and positions/length/etc of the grains. i find this far more and immediately playable than Traveler. This is what i want a playable grain sample-player to be. Thank you very much for this lovely tool!
Alex Enkerli

Wow. Part of what makes this ensemble so valuable is that it’s very satisfying out of the box. And it really allows for deep exploration. The presets do a lot to help in learning. The embedded samples are well-curated to demonstrate the type of work which can be done. The variety of controls which can be applied make for a very broad-ranging tool without feeling overwhelming. Playing with the bigger knobs does feel like the appropriate thing to try (one point for Norman affordances). Mapping them to MIDI CC makes for a really fun tool. Should also work well with TouchOSC (or Lemur, as per the included template). Been hearing people talk for hours about commercial plugins which do less than this ensemble. In some contexts, this could easily justify the “cost of admission” in the Reaktor universe. In fact, makes me think that NI should pull a kind of Max gen~ move and allow people to compile standalone versions of ensembles. If it ever happens, there really is a case to be made about working with this GRIP Grain Cloud synth. Really good work!

@Martijn: Oops... you should probably also turn the "Glide" knob in the pitch frame to zero.
Uwe G. Hoenig
Hi Martijn, please try setting the "Inertia" knob in the "Distance" frame to zero. Does that help? (In the Default patch, the grid for the grain distance incorporates "octaves", hence it is note dependent, and coupled with inertia this gives you sort of a glide effect. I admit that this was no good setting for the default patch, sorry for this.) Regarding "the release of the previous note, ends up in the attack of the new note": this is a bug in the Grain Cloud module. I investigated it and found others complaining about exact the same thing with this module. I tried hard to find a workaround for this, but I failed. (See also my comment from two years ago regarding this.) Sorry, but a cure for this is out of my reach. :-(

I'm having trouble using this synth. I used the default patch, turned all the mods to off, but still the sample i use (from my own library) triggers with a pitch slide (pitch sliding from way up to the triggered note). Also, when i stop triggering a note and trigger a new note, the release of the previous note, ends up in the attack of the new note. This might be a setting i'm overlooking. Help would be appreciated.

Oops, didn't notive that new comments are at the bottom now... @ Gabor Varga: I also noticed such an effect, and I guess we mean the same: the first grain of a new note ist played with the parameters of the last note - which gets more obvious with longer grains. I tried hard to get rid of this, but I couldn't... As you can see I included a "retrigger grain" source (for example on Note On) in the Distance frame which is useful anyway, but it doesn't fix this behaviour. I tend to believe that this is a bug in the Grain Cloud module. If anybody can help with this I'd be very happy...
