Controlling Dynamics in Valves Pro Solo and Ensemble

Abstract

Both Valves Pro Solo and Ensemble enable you to play dynamically using the Dynamics parameter and MIDI note velocity.

Valves Pro Solo and Ensemble use a combination of MIDI note velocity and the Dynamics parameter to control the dynamics of the sound. You can adjust Dynamics directly in the Valves Pro user interface, or use the modulation wheel (MIDI CC#1). This enables you to play a musical phrase with velocity while adding inner note dynamics with the mod wheel or automation. Furthermore, you can change the balance of the notes in a chord by slightly changing the velocities of the instruments.

The following rules apply to controlling the dynamics of the sound:

  • When Dynamics (or the modulation wheel) is set to center position, the velocity can be used in its full range from 1-127.

  • Notes with a maximum velocity of 127 can only be lowered in volume using Dynamics, while notes with minimum velocity of 1 can only be raised in volume.

  • If you want to maximize the control range of Dynamics, play the instrument with a fixed velocity of around 64, for example using a MIDI effect in your DAW.
