Recording in Your DAW
Now that you have an overall sound that you like for your track, it is time to record some notes. Please follow these steps:
Set the tempo for your project by using your DAW’s tempo controls or by holding down the Shift button on your Kontrol keyboard and tapping its Metro/Tap Tempo button within the Transport Zone in time with the tempo that you want.
If you have a count-in setup in your DAW, you can toggle it on and off by holding down the Shift button on your Kontrol keyboard and pressing its Record/Count-In button within the Transport Zone.
You can toggle the DAW’s metronome by pressing the Metro button within the Transport Zone of the Kontrol keyboard. Please turn it on for this example.
If your track is not already armed for recording, arm it according to the instructions for your chosen DAW.
Make sure that you are at the start of your project by pressing the Stop button within the Kontrol keyboard’s Transport Zone.
Press the Record button within your Kontrol keyboard’s Transport Zone. If you have a count-in enabled, you will hear the metronome start and the count-in begin. When any count-in is complete you can just start playing. In Logic Pro this will record notes into the current track. In Ableton Live your playing will be recorded into the current clip in the selected track.
Stop recording by pressing the Stop button within the Kontrol keyboard’s Transport Zone again. The DAW’s play head will remain at the time at which you stopped recording.
If your timing was a little off you can quantize the recorded notes to your DAW’s grid settings by pressing the Quant button within the Kontrol keyboard’s Control Zone.
If you really did not like what you played, you can undo it by pressing the Undo/Redo button within the Kontrol keyboard’s Transport Zone (if you press Undo by accident, you can hold down the Shift button on the Kontrol keyboard and press the Undo/Redo button to redo your recording).
To hear what you recorded, follow these steps:
Press the Stop button that is located in the Transport Zone to return the DAW’s play head to the start of the project.
Press the Play button within the Kontrol keyboard’s Transport Zone and you will hear your recording played back to you.
Press the Play button on the Kontrol keyboard to pause playback at any time. The DAW’s play head will be positioned at the point at which you paused playback.
Hold down the Shift button on the Kontrol keyboard and press its Play button to resume playback from where it was paused.
Punch-In Recording
If you are playing your track and want to punch-in a section, just press the Record button within the Kontrol keyboard’s Transport Zone and the DAW will immediately start recording from the current play head position. Press the Kontrol keyboard’s Play button to punch out.
