Setting up Traktor Play

Abstract

Learn how to set up Traktor Play with your DJ controller.

This section assumes that you have already installed Traktor Play using Native Access. If this is not the case, follow the instructions using this link Registering and Installing a Native Instruments Product using Native Access.

When starting Traktor Play for the first time, you need to configure the software so that it works in your specific setup. This includes the following steps:

  1. Importing data from previous installations: If you have installed a previous Traktor version, Traktor asks you to import the data. Refer to Importing your data from a previous Traktor version.

  2. Configuring Traktor for use with your DJ controller: The handling and configuration of Traktor will vary depending on your DJ controller. Refer to Configuring Traktor Play for your DJ controller.

Importing your data from a previous Traktor version

When you start Traktor for the first time, Traktor will ask if you want to import your previous data by copying the existing user content to a new folder in your user folder. Your previous data will not be altered if you copy it to the new default folder.

Configuring Traktor Play for your DJ controller

The required configuration steps in Traktor Play will vary with your particular DJ controller:

Configuring Traktor Play for the AlphaTheta DDJ-FLX2 controller

The AlphaTheta DDJ-FLX2 controller is plug-and-play. Traktor Play will configure itself automatically when your DJ controller is connected to your computer:

  1. Connect your DDJ-FLX2 controller to your computer.

  2. Start Traktor Play.

    Traktor Play is ready for use with your controller.

Checking the audio configuration

You can check the audio configuration in Traktor Play as follows:

  1. Select Audio Setup… from the File (Windows) or Traktor (Mac) menu in the application menu bar.

    The Audio Setup page of the Preferences opens.

  2. At the top of the Audio Setup page, check that the Audio Device field reads DDJ-FLX2 (Mac) or DDJ-FLX2 (WASAPI) (Windows).

  3. (Windows only) Optional: In the Built-in Soundcard section, you can select the internal soundcard of your computer. Traktor Play will use this soundcard as fallback if your DJ controller is not available.

  4. In the left column of the Preferences dialog, select Output Routing.

  5. In the Output Monitor section, check that the PHONES outputs of your DJ controller are selected.

  6. In the Output Master section, check that the MASTER outputs of your DJ controller are selected.

  7. Click Close at the bottom of the Preferences dialog to close the dialog.

Using your DDJ-FLX2 with Traktor

Detailed information about the DDJ-FLX2 controller mapping is available in the PDF sheet.

Please note the following regarding specific controls on your FLX2:

  • Master Level knob: The master level is adjusted on the hardware independently of Traktor. In Traktor the MAIN volume knob is fixed at 0 dB.

  • Headphones Level knob: The headphones level is adjusted on the hardware independently of Traktor. In Traktor the Headphone Cue Volume knob is fixed at 100 % and the Headphone Cue Mix knob at 0 %.

  • MASTER CUE button: The MASTER CUE button adds the Master signal to the headphones. To hear the pure Master signal, switch off the channels’ Headphones CUE buttons 1 and 2 on your controller.

Configuring Traktor Play for the AlphaTheta DDJ-FLX4 controller

The AlphaTheta DDJ-FLX4 controller is plug-and-play. Traktor Play will configure itself automatically when your DJ controller is connected to your computer:

  1. Connect your DDJ-FLX4 controller to your computer.

  2. Start Traktor Play.

    Traktor Play is ready for use with your controller.

Checking the audio configuration

You can check the audio configuration in Traktor Play as follows:

  1. Select Audio Setup… from the File (Windows) or Traktor (Mac) menu in the application menu bar.

  2. At the top of the Audio Setup page, check that the Audio Device field reads DDJ-FLX4 (Mac) or DDJ-FLX4 (WASAPI) (Windows).

  3. (Windows only) Optional: In the Built-in Soundcard section, you can select the internal soundcard of your computer. Traktor Play will use this soundcard as fallback if your DJ controller is not available.

  4. In the left column of the Preferences dialog, select Output Routing.

  7. If you plan to use a microphone in your setup, you can additionally click Input Routing on the left to open the Input Routing page, and check that the MIC input of your controller is selected in the L (Mono) field of the Input Aux section.

  8. Click Close at the bottom of the Preferences dialog to close the dialog.

Using your DDJ-FLX4 with Traktor

Please note the following regarding specific controls on your FLX4:

  • MASTER LEVEL knob: The master level is adjusted on the hardware independently of Traktor. In Traktor the MAIN volume knob is fixed at 0 dB.

  • Headphones MIX knob: The headphones mix is adjusted on the hardware independently of Traktor. In Traktor the Headphone Cue Mix knob is fixed at 0 %. Note: Activate the Master CUE button to hear the main output in your headphones.

  • Headphones LEVEL knob: The headphones level is adjusted on the hardware independently of Traktor. In Traktor the Headphone Cue Volume knob is fixed at 100 %.

  • To control the Volume and Dry/Wet parameters of the FX Units in Traktor from your FLX4:

    1. Set the FX SELECT switch to 1&2.

    2. Hold the BEAT ◁ button and turn the LEVEL/DEPTH knob to adjust the Pattern Player’s Volume parameter.

      Hold the BEAT ▷ button and turn the LEVEL/DEPTH knob to adjust the FX Unit 2’s Dry/Wet parameter.

Configuring Traktor Play for the Reloop Buddy

Before you can use your Reloop Buddy with Traktor Play, you need to complete both the audio and mapping configuration.

Configuring the audio setup

Follow the steps below to configure the audio setup for your Reloop Buddy controller in Traktor Play.

Note

On Windows you first have to download and install Reloop’s ASIO driver from the Reloop Download Finder.

  1. Connect your Reloop Buddy controller to your computer.

  2. Start Traktor Play.

  3. Select Audio Setup… from the File (Windows) or Traktor (Mac) menu in the application menu bar.

  4. Select Reloop Buddy (Core Audio) (Mac) or Reloop (ASIO) (Windows) from the Audio Device drop-down menu.

  5. In the left column of the Preferences dialog, select Output Routing.

  6. In the Output Monitor section, select the 3: Phones L and 4: Phones R outputs from the L and R menus.

  7. In the Output Master section, select the 1: MasterOutL and 2: MasterOutR outputs from the L and R menus.

  8. Click Close at the bottom of the Preferences dialog to close the dialog.

    The audio in Traktor is now configured.

Configuring the controller mapping

Follow the steps below to configure the mapping for your Reloop Buddy controller in Traktor Play.

  1. Connect your Reloop Buddy controller to your computer.

  2. Start Traktor Play.

  3. Select Controller Manager… from the File (Windows) or Traktor (Mac) menu in the application menu bar.

    The Controller Manager page of the Preferences opens.

  4. Click Add… in the Device Setup section and select Pre-mapped > Reloop > Buddy from the menu.

  5. Click Close at the bottom of the Preferences dialog to close the dialog.

    Traktor Play is ready for use with your controller.

Configuring Traktor Play for the Reloop Ready

Before you can use your Reloop Ready with Traktor Play, you need to complete both the audio and mapping configuration.

Configuring the audio setup

Follow the steps below to configure the audio setup for your Reloop Ready controller in Traktor Play.

  2. Start Traktor Play.

  4. Select Reloop Ready (Core Audio) (Mac) or Reloop (ASIO) (Windows) from the Audio Device drop-down menu.

  5. In the left column of the Preferences dialog, select Output Routing.

  7. In the Output Master section, select the 1: MasterOutL and 2: MasterOutR outputs from the L and R menus.

  8. Click Close at the bottom of the Preferences dialog to close the dialog.

    The audio in Traktor is now configured.

Follow the steps below to configure the mapping for your Reloop Ready controller in Traktor Play.

  1. Connect your Reloop Ready controller to your computer.

  2. Start Traktor Play.

  3. Select Controller Manager… from the File (Windows) or Traktor (Mac) menu in the application menu bar.

  4. Click Add… in the Device Setup section and select Pre-mapped > Reloop > Ready from the menu.

  5. Click Close at the bottom of the Preferences dialog to close the dialog.

    Traktor Play is ready for use with your controller.
